How I used the thought would depend on the situation.

If I was in a restaurant, about to order, I could use the original untrue thought, “I’m too fat,” and pick out something that wouldn’t exceed my calorie intake limit for the day.

If I was at a social gathering, I might use the equally untrue opposite thought, “I’m not too fat,” so that I could feel good about myself and project that feeling in my self-confidence through my positive self-esteem.

If I was going for my FAA physical and stepping on the scale, the thought, “I’m not too fat,” would be of more benefit to me since I couldn’t do anything about my weight at that moment other than accept it as it was.

At earlier stages of the practice of the ITTIL technique, there were times I felt the need to find some reasoning in order to see both the original and the opposite thought as equally untrue.

So in the case of the FAA physical or the social gathering, my reasoning might be “I’m not too fat, because I’m always exactly the way I need to be in the moment.”

If the reasoning that supported the opposite thought was rekindling belief, I’d revisit the original thought, “I’m too fat,” and use reasoning to support it, so that I could neutralize the belief in the opposite thought that I was not too fat.

My reasoning would include telling myself I’m too fat because my belt is straining and the collar of my shirt is cutting into my neck. Or simply that I didn’t feel great like I used to—I felt heavier and running seemed harder.

If I’d find myself believing the original thought all over again, I’d swing the pendulum the other way to find a neutral, belief-free balance.

This neutral, belief-free point is where supporting reasoning is no longer needed, since both thoughts are seen as equally untrue.

I’ve given examples of where the original thought could be beneficial and where the opposite thought could also be beneficial. What about the instance where neither thought is beneficial?

Let’s say I’m in bed, about to sleep, and the thought, “I’m too fat” arises. I would determine that the thought and its opposite are both not beneficial at the moment. Why?

Well, because I’m in the business of going to sleep right now. Bring on thoughts of sheep hopping over fences, thank you very much!

Determining the benefit of a thought is a personal thing. There’s no right or wrong in choosing to use or discard a thought. There’s no belief to create regret.

Once you’ve come to the point where you don’t believe the thought or its opposite, determining if a thought is beneficial is the easiest part of the ITTIL technique.

Experience will be your teacher, and soon even determining the benefit of a thought will be as obvious as it is automatic.

It becomes like using your hands. When they are beneficial, you use them. It’s automatic. You don’t sit there and philosophize, “Am I my hands? If so, what happens when
